Day 1: Kerala

After over a day of traveling from the U.S., three of us met up in Kerala today: Lokesh, Ed, and Marc. Marc is actually a traitor from the Official India trip, but we let him hang out with us in Kerala anyway.

This is the Cochin Airport in Kerala. Didn't feel like winter getting off the plane in sunny 90 degree weather. Our final destination today was the Coconut Lagoon, but since Marc and Ed were there a couple of hours before Lokesh, they decided to do some local sightseeing...

Ed and Marc in front St. Francis Church. This church, which is India's oldest European-built church, was constructed by the Portuguese in 1503.

Ed in front of some Chinese fishing nets, which were introduced by the traders from the court of Kublai Khan. It takes four men to operate their system of counterweights.

Marc inside the Fort Cochin. They didn't let us take photos of anything inside, so this was the best we could do.

Marc and Lokesh on the way to the Coconut Lagoon. The resort is only accessible by water, which is why we had to take this boat through the backwaters.

The Coconut Lagoon. The three of us stayed in a thrawad (cottage) while we were there.

As you can tell by Marc's expression, the food was delicious.

Kerala Ayurveda in itself has become synonymous with Ayurveda in India, the northern state of Delhi and other nearby destinations like Haridwar and Rishikesh also have some very well-known centers for Ayurveda treatments.
